The Art of Warfare Blogs: TAW Blogs

    Feanor Interview - Fun mode

Q1: For the readers, can you please state your name, rank and current function within TAW.
    Feanor, Major General, Vanguard Commander

Q2: We have all heard about Tribes: Ascend. Why did you choose this specific game for TAW.

Tribes has a rich history as one of the main First Person Shooters that popularized online multi-player gaming. I have followed Tribes for years back to the early 1990s when it wasn't even a FPS, it was a Mech game and the primary competitor to Mech Warrior. It started with Earthsiege 1, Earthsiege 2, Starsiege, and then the series changed to FPS with Starsiege Tribes. As a game, Starsiege Tribes achieved a cult status and following, and took off as one of the most-played games in the early staged of the internet. The type of game is very much suited to TAW in the sense that it is class-based, team-oriented warfare that isn't just a death-match type game, but focuses on achieving objectives in an organized fashion.

Q3: How did you manage to get unlimited Beta Keys for TAW members.
We met with a representative from Hi-Rez studios one evening on the TAW teamspeak. We explained to him what TAW is, what our history has been and what we'd like to do with Tribes. He graciously offered to provide TAW with as many beta keys as we could use, and we have been taking advantage of that.

Q4: With Tribes featuring limited recruitment options, in term of friend-list chat, Forums ect, whats the plan to bring in recruits?
Tribes is in beta right now and is constantly evolving. The developers have stated they will be adding communication and messaging features to the game so that should be improving soon. In addition to this, recruitment forums will become available as well.

Q5: With the recent decrease in game sales, how do you see that effecting TAW Horizon.
Any decrease in game sales would actually help Tribes given that it is a free-to-play game

Q6: What is the #1 attribute a divison needs to launch successfully out of Vanguard?
To successfully launch out of VG, a game needs 2 things: a strong unit and strong leadership. A srrong unit means high numbers and a good culture and sense of order. Good leadership is defined by having a full compliment of staff in place, all performing their jobs well with a sense of the future of the unit in mind.

Now that the fun part is over, we have some more serious questions for you.

Q7: When people mention you its often "There he is, oh... wait" how do you manage to vanish so fast on TS? Ninja skills?
I have a special skill that alerts me to when people start looking for me. ;) In all seriousness though, I am always available for anyone to talk to, and my channels are always open to anyone! I love meeting with and chatting with all the members, especially new recruits.

Q8: Is Atari making a comeback? Do you see Pong coming to TAW?
Unfortunately, Atari is deep in our past and much of it deep in landfills as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_video_game_burial

Q9: Do you think, bringing "Dance, Dance Revolution" into TAW could help the fitness of members?
Ha, I remember a long time ago I changed the description of the TAW afk channel to "take breaks every hour and get up and move around or get blood clots!" Fitness for gamers is an important issue, and things like the PS dance mat and the microsoft kinect are proof of this. It's possible the future generations of consoles will become powerful enough to be compatable with teamspeak or whatever communication platform TAW will be using, but as for making a competitive organized group out of a dancing game, that is certainly a unique challenge :P

Q10: Now, since your an Army guy, are you for or against, using the movie Major Payne as a DI training tool?
Major Paine was a pretty funny movie, and not as dissimilar as people might think from real bootcamp. We often makes jokes about getting new recruits to "get down and give us 50," but in all seriousness, I'm glad that TAW has remained a friendly and open organization that welcomes new recruits and is a positive place for building teams.
