    Clash of the Titans

Tonight is the night it happened.  It is the time when Vanguard finally stepped up to OS and called them out, challenged them to a duel.  Oh yeah.

What was it over? We don’t know.  Perhaps it was because OS did not pick up the bar tab at the last CC meeting when it was their turn, maybe it was Ekis taking the last cookie meant for Kingcheese or maybe…., or maybe  it was just one doggie picture took many…….

The important thing is honour is now on the line and justice needs to be served.   Therefore the search begins to find the best free to play games (free as VG had to pay the tab so penniless) to get this battle of honour under way.

    World of Warplanes Update

    World of Warplanes NDA Removed
    "Pilots!

Firstly, thank you for all of your patience and holding true to our original EULA that required you to not publicly share your experiences with World of Warplanes over the last year. Today, April 4th, we've officially lifted the NDA restriction and thus have given you the "OK" to share your experiences with your friends.

We can't thank you enough for all of your hard work in helping us test our game. There's still a lot to be done before we let WoWP out of the hangar, and we'll have more news to share about our development in the coming months. For today we're just excited to see what type of original content you produce from blogs, to videos, and more!

Thank again you for all of your support.

    Get Airborne!

    Vanguard Update: All About Mechs

    VANGUARD

Welcome to the next Vanguard update.

As always in VG we try to work with our community and membership to bring you the games you want to see.  If there is a game you want to see, check on the Vanguard forums and add or create a post or complete questionnaire of which the link is below:-

    VG Game Interest Form

    Thank you

    The Vanguard Team

For this edition we are focusing on the Mechs.  You can saddle up and bring the wrath with Hawken or you can go to total war with Mechwarrior Online.  Sounds interesting? Like abit of heavy metal? You want to get it on and pound some metal. Well read on…….

It’s worth noting both of these games were recently opened for general transfers.

    Hawken

Hawken is a multi-player mechanical combat game in open beta.

Hawken takes place on a human-colonized planet, industrialized to the point of collapse; in which the hunt for resources has become a battle for survival

The game focuses on creating an intense battle experience that captures the feel of piloting a mech while keeping the action fast-paced and strategic. The game is about playing team-death match, death match, missile assault or siege mode. Each promotes its own variation of gameplay, from one verses all, through to six versus six team based combat.

The maps are an astonishingly pretty cyberscape based in a futuristic dystopia, with flickering neon, ash-flake filled air, and battered synthetic surfaces. Some of them have impressive verticality: layered loops with the ability to drop down and leap up stories of huge, rumbling buildings. The maps are varied, quite beautiful, and detailed.

    <iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dOU4HBJaZ-o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Hawken Video embeddable and available in HD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOU4HBJaZ-o

Even at this relatively early stage, Hawken lives up to the hype. As a FPS Mech game it stands out from anything else out there. The Siege mode, feel, and Pace especially, separates this free-to-play game from the crowd.

It's the type of experience that gets under your skin, making you want to come back for more. And that's exactly the type of formula necessary for a game to succeed in the free-to-play gaming landscape.

    TAW MWO division

As most of you know we launched our own MWO division into TAW in December 2012, the team has grown to in excess of 60 members, and thanks to me, now shrunk to 49 members as people have moved on to other games while they eagerly wait for the game to be released.

I have to admit it is difficult waiting, when we already have so much in the game, but the developers have their own timetable and you can’t rush perfection, I guess it will just make it that much sweeter when this game is finally released with all the frills.

The division as a whole has made great strides, with 4 practices per week, regular attendances ranging from 36 members online in one practice to an average of 24 members between two practices NA and EU. Considering there are only 14 EU players, those stats are pretty good.

It grieves me whenever I am forced to remove the inactives, but you have to prune the plant to keep it growing properly, and we are stronger for it.

Very welcome news that we have been given the green light for internal transfers, especially since we still need to grow the OC division and it would be great to have some more TAW members join our EU and NA teams too.

    MechWarrior online

MechWarrior online is based on the MechWarrior universe, which has itself grown to include a huge variety of mech style games, such as MW 1-4, MW mercenaries 1-2, Mech Commander 1-2, Mech Assault and a huge number of other mech games that followed. In addition to the computer games there are also several hundred books and board games for the MechWarrior Universe.

Unfortunately Microsoft ran into a copyright battle with Harmony Gold over using mech designs that were too similar to Robotec and Macros; as a result no further MW games were made.

10 years later and PGI won the copyright and started developing a free to play game called MechWarrior online. With a huge fan base, PGI posted profits of $5 million, just for the closed beta sales of the Founders mech packages. These packages were scaled Veteran, Elite and Legendary, with the top package going for $120, it gives 3 months premium bonus, 4 founders mechs, which give various xp and credit boosts and you get your name and call sign in the credits for the game.

That offer is closed, and the game is long since out of closed beta and 6 months into open beta J

Since then despite still being in open beta, the developers are still rolling out premium packs, hero mechs, new mech designs, new cosmetics and a steady stream of new content for the game, which has resulted in a growing fan base for the game.

    The Game

The MWO game basically puts you in a FPS that requires something more than just point and shoot, you can use terrain to your advantage, builds, loadouts weapons etc. The game is based around playing roles, be it scouting, tagging, ecm support, brawler, medium, heavy or assault or long range, medium, support or heavy. There are a variety of weapons to choose from some are energy based, others are ballistic some are missile based.

Despite being near completion the developers are being very closed mouthed about a release date, and are continuing to keep the game in open beta, while rolling out various new expansions, new maps, new mechs, new premium packs, new camouflage on a fortnightly basis, rolling in the money and at the same time keeping the game balanced so that it is not pay to win.

Every two weeks there is a huge patch releasing even more content, and introducing new game mechanics, like ECM, or Tag which can counter ECM and allow you to paint a target for Long range missile support, or electric interference shoot energy weapons on a cloaked unit and it interrupts the ECM for a few seconds, keep firing on that enemy and they stay visible for your team.

The other nice thing about this game is it is not simply point and shoot, it requires skill, planning and whether you decide to shoot peoples arms or legs off, or just decide to snipe people in the head, all of these tactics and strategies are viable options.

The game is based on teamplay, if you want to run around chasing kills while your team dies, you can try and do that, chances are WE TAW will pick you off one by one and you can start crying about how OP we are J

In MWO, it takes a lot to take you down, assuming you don’t get an alpha strike in the face from a 100 ton Atlas, or assuming you are not busy sniping and in turn get shot in the head, but using cover and varying team tactics, you can last quite a while or not depending on your play style J

This is DavrosDalek our TS who despite losing both his arms and one leg, cored in the chest with just two energy weapons still managed to win. We fight hard, we die hard and no matter what we win, Victory in death! J

    Dying

A match takes 15 minutes, and if you die, you are dead, there is no respawn until the end of the match.

    Resupply

Only what you take with you, part of choosing the right weapons, builds loadout etc, something we excel at, but don’t worry it will all be over quickly, or not J

    Map grid references

Just to use an example that Zeh posted on the TAW forums for the Alpine map, one of the annoying things about Tribes Ascend is you spot an enemy and there is no clear detail as to where the enemy is approaching from, yes, you can give basic descriptions of terrain etc. but chances are half your team at looking the wrong way when you give the references.

Not so MWO, in addition to a standard radar with a zoomed in grid reference in front of you, there is also a map function which allows you to track enemy movements on the map and zoom in and concentrate fire on specific targets which are pre-assigned letters A through H (Alpha to Hotel).

    Hero Mechs ((http://mwomercs.com/media/video/2sYajupi15I)

Light, medium, heavy and assault chassis

Please note each chassis has 5 or 6 variants to it, some are good for ballistic, others for energy, others for missiles

    Skill, strategy, Tactics, Nerves

Even if you are piloting a 25-35 ton mech and you run into the whole enemy team, if you keep your wits about you, you can still run out the other side, if you use tactics to your advantage, be it jump jets, terrain, ecm, tag, prayer or dodging around the cumbersome heavy mechs and getting them to shoot each other, you have options, don’t just give up and stand still.

Ikon steps up as DC of Vanguard Horizon Division

I am really pleased to announce that Ikon, formerly the DO of Dota has accepted the DC position of the Vanguard Horizon division.

Having worked with Ikon whilst Dota was a spin up team in Vanguard previously I can say that his addition to the Vanguard staff will make us stronger and help ensure the high standards we strive for are maintained.

In the time ahead, the extra pair of hands he will provide will really help as Vanguard ramp up the games that we look to bring into and spin up for the benefit of TAW.

    TAW Hits 2300 Member Mark!

As of Sunday, February 17 TAW hit a new milestone by reaching the 2300 member mark! Also when I checked our newly updated Team Speak server we had over 520+ members on at one time.

This makes our server one of the busiest in the world. All of this success is all due to the hard work put in by countess members and every level of our organization.

Remember TAW has never focus on strictly the number of members. We have only focused on growing a like minded and disciplined organization.
    Congrats to YOU TAW,
    SoonerOKC

    In The Scope: Kedzie

Few new members can rightfully claim that they did as much for their division in their first month as Kedzie in the LL division. At the time of publication, the young Polish born DI has been in TAW just 32 days and has recruited over 80 new members into LL. USNNuke took some of his time away from bolstering the LL ranks to talk about gaming, TAW, and how he does what he does.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    - First off tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Victor Kedzie. I'm from Warsaw, Poland and I live in Chicago, Illinois. I've been a gamer since young age (started with Pokemon) and been in gaming communities for about 3 years now, first clan was for COD4.

    - What made you decide to join TAW?

The structure, the order and the age of the clan all drew me to it. Additionally, all the games that TAW supports were a big plus.

    - What do you think League of Legends has to offer to TAW over the rest of the games?
The League crowd is very competitive since the game is very competitive. It is a game where people can strive to become "better gamers." The community can help them achieve that goal. Also, there are plyers who are already good enough to represent TAW in tournaments. These two aspects, the former creating abundant leadership positions as mentors and trainers and the latter adding the TAW name to yet another competitive arena, make the League of Legends Division a valuable one to have.

    - How does it feel being in the largest div in TAW?
I've been in fairly large communities before, so it feels right.

    - How about you personally, what are some things others might be surprised to know about you?
I don't play very often. I'm a casual gamer. I concentrate strongly on every match that I play, and need to take a short break after each one.

    - What are some of your favorite real life hobbies outside of gaming?
I enjoyed being an admin of a clan before. I guess it's just something I really like. One day I wish to be a TAW admin, so I can help the clan run smoother.

    - After only 27 days in TAW, you were selected to represent your division in the newsletter. What do you feel makes you a perfect example of an LL member?
Perfect? I'd be perfect if I was any good at the game. I suppose, because I wanna help out any way I can. My general rule is to dedicate myself to a single thing and do anything I can to improve it. I always want to make things better and more efficient. That's why I started recruiting people into the division and why I applied for a Drill Instructor position: I wanted to help out.

    - Rumor has it you recruited 80 new members in under a month. How did you accomplish this?
    1. Lots of Time. Advertising like a maniac.
    2. Lots of Patience. Only about half of the people you talk to will actually pass bootcamp.

My Recruiting Experience In Depth (include or exclude at your discretion):

Recruiter is like a Sales Representative. You have to sell the product (the clan), you have to build relationship with the customer (potential recruit) and you have to ensure that they follow every necessary step to completion in order to "close the sale", meaning to successfully recruit them. Oh yeah, I was a sales rep for a couple companies. ^^"

    What do you need?

    1. Time. And lots of it. You would need to spend hours upon days simply advertising for the clan on forums, in chatrooms and individually. Without advertising, how will people know about the clan? If you wanna spend 6 hours a days doing nothing but spreading the word that TAW is recruiting, then that's advertising. (Remember how I said that I'm a casual gamer? Guess what I'm doing when I'm not playing)

    2. Patience. A lot of people that inquire about the clan just aren't TAW material. Be it that they are too young, don't speak fluent English, don't have a microphone, can't attend practices, or are just plainly rude, out of all that time that you spend on advertising, about a quarter of the people you talk to will fail the initial screening (assuming you spend the time to talk to them one-on-one, which you should be). The initial screening is when you go over the basic requirements for the clan and what is expected of the person, should they become a member. Out of the people who do pass the initial screening, about a third of those will not complete their application process. Either they change their mind cause they don't want to commit, they never check their email for the next step, or you failed to stay in contact with them (or the Drill Instructor never made the effort to contact them personally). Often, the applicant will fill out the application and completely forget about it (that is why continuous contact is necessary). Sometimes, they will fail bootcamp last minute, because they don't like the "strictness" of the clan. "Oh dear," they would moan, "a clan with rules and order. What ever shall I do?"

Ultimately my math comes down to roughly 50% success rate. Is it time consuming? You bet. Is it frustrating? Oh yes. Why am I doing it? Grimagin asked me to, and I figured that's the way I could help out the clan without a need for any leadership position.
