What are your favourite video game soundtracks? My all-time favourite is Red Alert. Hell March (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb-gI_pFog0) and Hell March 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WqwFhX6Cqg) are probably the best known songs.
Aside Red Alert, pretty much everything by Jeremy Soule is awesome. He composed music for The Elder Scrolls-series, Company of Heroes, and best of all, Supreme Commander: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdMt6_gYif4.
If you like the Red Alert songs, this would probably be up your ally. It is Frank Klepacki, the guy who made the music for most Command and Conquer. It is not from any game but it is awesome
I have a hard time choosing the best game soundtrack but this one is in my top 5 at least

Starcraft 2's main theme.
Oh, and the best video game composer ever is Jeff Van Dyck. Bet you don't know what he wrote!
I know Jeff did a song on the Original Sled storm for playstation 1 (played it only last week :P) bur other then that I don't know. I bet he still works for EA and did the BF theme right?
I've got a copy of Skyrim's soundtrack sitting on my shelf signed by Jeremy Soule. Also, the soundtrack for Bastion, Portal, Machinarium and Botanicula, Sword and Sworcery, Ace Combat, The Witcher series, Age of Empires...I'm a bit of a game music fan :P
Im a huge fan of the dark electronic ambient soundtrack of Portal 2. Some bits i found on youtube:
Tripple laser phase: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvfOqf0Sf0o
Halls of Science 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vZ2OMh-YkA
Ghost of Rattman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi24qLOaF7w
The future starts with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oySjvRgctgE
And its all free from the game makers: http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php
And not to forget, the first game song that haunted me for a whole summer when I was a kid:
Spellbound (on commodore 64)
(...strong C64 knowledge belies your age Dogstar!)
One of my all-time favourites is the Xenon 2 Megablast Soundtrack, interesting wiki info here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenon_2_Megablast#Soundtrack
And the classic bouncing beats of the Amiga track here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-tiRnac2k
I agree with Jeremy Soule being one of the best composers. If you played Guild Wars and didn't get the alternate music packs, you missed out on something special. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9RcDXvYxAs I think Direct Song sells only his stuff.
One surprise for me is the Stronghold series music!!
