Indie Game Corner: Guns of Icarus Online
What happens when you take the water out of naval battles? Mostly you end up with little movement and a lot less sea sickness. But if you were to suspend the ships on huge hot-air balloons and float them thousands of feet above a post-apocalyptic wasteland, you'd have something close to Guns of Icarus Online.
Guns of Icarus Online is an indie-developed death match game with an awesome twist. You and your team have no personal weapons and one of you pilots a steam-powered dirigible through the skies over a blasted landscape. A captain for each ship picks one of the seven unique air-ship, equipped with any of the fifteen various guns hand-picked by the captain. The captain's crew attempts to blast the enemy's ships from the sky and keep their own aloft. Gunners equip speciality ammo to add effects to their guns, or change its characteristics slightly. Engineers scurry about the decks, repairing the ships systems and occasionally buffing them as well.
Guns of Icarus Online is a surprisingly tense game. When the chips are down and you're locked in deadly combat with an enemy ship hot your tail, it's extremely exhilarating dashing about the deck of your airship, trying desperately with your three other crew members to keep your ship afloat. This is a game that benefits from levels of coordination more than anything else. A well-oiled team will go a great deal farther than one or two key players trying to carry their team. I would suggest if you can find a coordinated group of people (quite easy to find it TAW), I would suggest throwing down some money for this great game while it's on sale and joining up in a crew. The game is still under development with many exciting updates to come!
