The BF4 Spin-Up and Future Division
Horizon Team, a program within Vanguard to help develop divisions better, will form around 1 August 2013 to prepare documentation for the new BF4 division. During this period, drill instructors (DIs) will be trained before 1 October 2013, when the beta starts. Once the beta starts, the spin-up team, led by TexasHillbilly will start recruiting, activate forums and socialize ideas to ensure quality membership. TexasHillbilly has set the goal high and expects to bring in 250 members before becoming a full-fledged division in TAW.

The backbone of the BF3 division is the internal matches, dubbed "Battlelines" for BF3 (it will likely be named differently in BF4). We are currently coming up on the 14th "season" of Battlelines, which most likely will be the last for BF3. I can't speak for other games and divisions within TAW, but the thought that has gone into Battlelines has been nothing short of consistent A-plus effort by all staff and members. There has been controversy, but controversy spurs discussion, and discussion leads to solutions. Every generation of the BF staff has placed great emphasis on creating a fun and innovative structure for the internal matches, led by the field specialist (FS).
The internal match structure is evolving and should continue to be the priority for BF4. It decides how trainings are conducted, how competition teams are organized and how membership is maintained. It prepares members to play against other clans in scrimmages and molds recruits into leaders. With the hopeful improvements being made to BF4 by DICE and ideas being concretized by the current TAW staff, the next BF division should see a lot of success. It has, and always will be, about the members.
Competition team and external scrimmages-should expect to play a bigger role, become more robust and sustainable in BF4.
So, as we anticipate the debut of BF4, current TAW members (in and out of the BF3 division), players thinking about joining TAW and players who are in other clans/gaming communities should know that the future BF4 division will be dedicated to creating the best structure for the game and will put its stamp on the community. The BF TAW division has evolved along with the game itself, and the next rendition of BF will highlight what TAW does so well. Everything.

The Arma 3 division in Vanguard is a bit of an anomaly for a start-up team. With 175+ members between the EU and NA battalions and a three year history the Arma division started with Arma2 and has stayed strong as a mainstay in TAW. Unlike many other games Arma2 never died out but continued to be popular and the division has thrived with the support of a strong modding community and lots of user generated content over the years.
The Arma division offers an intense military simulation with weekly practices that consist of mostly custom coop missions and campaigns made by our own members in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Our focus is on building strong teams at the squad level and then leveraging those teams in massive platoon and battalion level operations where skill, communication and camaraderie come together to deliver victory. The division also offers a comprehensive advanced individual training program allowing members to delve into the depths of the Arma platform and become recognized experts at all aspects of combined arms warfare across the 200+ km2 environment of a typical Arma map.
In the transition to Arma 3 our team is excited to be part of porting this amazing division we have built over the last few years over to a fresh new simulation environment. Arma 3 upgrades the Arma platform to a near-future military world with refreshed graphics, lighting, new weapons, terrain and vehicles as well as new environments such as underwater operations. Many of the features pioneered in Arma2 mods, such as movement and stance enhancements are incorporated into the base Arma3 game and the mission making tools are now even easier to use and more flexible, opening up custom content development to even more members. At the same time the new game allows us to leverage much of the scripting and content that worked in prior versions. It's a best case scenario for the future of Arma in TAW and we're excited to be moving forward.

Since the start of the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Division, we have grown in size to 36 members and are growing every week. Our members are on the brink of completing the end game content already implemented. We will be looking at grabbing a Guild House as soon as the content becomes available. Thankfully with the donations of in game currency through our members we will be able to purchase the Guild House as soon as the content is released. Our goals are to become a strong driving force within the game and to be the shinning example The Art of Warfare is known to be.
Since we are still in the young stages of the Community we are looking to make amazing strides as the game progresses. With the current setup that we have our raid groups will be working to obtain epic gear and strong players. We intend on starting a PVP group as well planned to be launched within the next month or two. Our crafting and gathering platoon is reaching new heights. Using the trading infrastructure that is slowly coming to be every day practice, we are able to craft things that haven't been able to be crafted before, due to need of more crafting professions. With everything starting to come around to where we are looking to be, it seems that up is the only way we can go. It will be exciting to see what's next for the Final Fantasy Realm within TAW.

Forget Falcon 4.0; the most detailed modern military aircraft simulator has to be DCS A-10. Released a couple of years ago, it set new standards for realistic avionic operations, using precisely the same procedures as the real tank buster when it came to operating the onboard aircraft and weapon systems. Unfortunately the world it was set in was the problem, with numerous AI limitations and limited campaign functionality. DCS World is the solution to that problem, as well as providing an answer to an altogether different problem; how do you keep a sim alive and thriving when it takes several years to develop a single aircraft to this level of complexity?
Available to download right now, free of charge, DCS World isn't so much a simulator as it is the framework in which other simulators will operate. The launch version includes a single geographical location centered on Georgia, an area invaded by Russia in 2008, which is 600km tall by 300km wide. DCS fans will note that this is the same area used in A10 and Black Shark. DCS World is the environment and assets from these games converted into a standalone platform, with future aircraft plugging in as modules. However, it's been substantially improved since these games, across many different areas.
Terrain detail has been updated to match the latest features in DCS A10, which includes HDR lighting, more detailed ground mapping and low-level grass and shrubs. It's filled with several cities, a mountain range and numerous rivers and valleys. A huge portion of the environment is the Black Sea, where numerous ships and aircraft carriers will facilitate naval ops. Animated trains and road traffic help the environment feel alive, while the excellent tree modeling delivers vast forests with minimal slow-down; if only the same could be said of urban buildings, which can have a dramatic impact on frame rates. Dynamic weather is built around high and low pressure zones, leading to moving weather systems, as well as area-specific conditions such as fog or thunder storms. Obviously fully dynamic time of day is included, allowing flights at dawn, dusk and night, where the accurately modelled constellations are perfectly visible.
The huge environment can be filled with several hundred incredibly detailed ground and air units controlled by the game's AI, allowing for huge ground and air battles which the player can fly through. The AI in particular has undergone massive changes, and alongside the improved mission building tools should allow for complex campaign creation that plays out in a semi-randomized way each time. Aircraft can now deploy multiple missiles at once, depending on the real world aircraft, and they'll also display far more human evasion techniques, such as Doppler notching. Zooming in on these units displays incredible detail, with nearly every unit updated to the new standard. All components are animated, including ground radar dishes and aircraft control surfaces.
DCS World ships with the free Su-25T ground attack aircraft, and Eagle Dynamics has recently announced multiple aircraft in development, including the F/A-18C (finally, carrier ops!), SU-27M, F-15C, and Mi-24 Hind, the coolest attack helicopter ever created. More importantly, the launch of DCS World includes the opening of the platform up to third party developers, which should deliver a steady stream of aircraft in future.
