With EA Play and E3 all done and set, and with all the information we received about Star Wars Battlefront 2, I figured why not make a post and detail everything, to make sure everyone receives the correct information, and is ready for what is to come as well. Bear in mind, this is all coming from what we have seen in the Pre-Alpha build at EA Play, and from what Game changers and Content creators shared online. So, without further ado, here is everything we know so far about Battlefront 2, gathered from various sources and videos.

Single Player:

  • Single Player story will span from the end of Return of the Jedi to The Force Awakens, linking the events that happened and transpired in between
  • Skirmish mode from the previous Battlefront will return, and will be accessible in co-op for console users. Skirmish will be limited in modes and maps due to restrictions by AI.
  • Certain rewards, customization, and heroes that you earn in offline play can be used in some way in online modes. This is subject to change.

Multiplayer:

  • There will be no season pass or premium in Battlefront 2
  • The game will feature micro transactions which will include unlocks and cosmetics. This means that if you do not have the time to unlock certain things, you can purchase them. Bear in mind, nothing, cosmetic or unlock wise, is locked behind a paywall. Everything can be earned in game with normal progress.
  • All post launch content will come in form of seasons, spanning anywhere from 1-3 months, and they will be completely free to everyone who owns the game

Micro-transactions

  • Micro-transactions will feature a loot-box similar, similar to Overwatch in structure, and Battlefield in nature.
  • Players will be able to buy loot-crates which will give them star cards depending on the crate itself.
  • Cards received in crates depend on the crate itself, as there are different levels of crate available (Similar to Battlefield 1)
  • Players can purchase the same crates in game, using credits earned after every match, similar to the first game. Don't want a uncommon crate? Buy a rare one. and vice versa.
  • Players can also receive more credits in crates, as well as scraps.
  • Scraps can be used to individually upgrade star cards, meaning you don't have to receive the card in question to upgrade it. The upgrade cost goes up with depending on the transition. Meaning going from uncommon to rare is more expensive than common to uncommon.
  • Here is a video detailing the system, and showing some off. More info will be posted as we get it.

Multiplayer Game modes:

  • So far, two game modes has been confirmed so far. Galactic Assault and Starfighter Assault
  • Galactic assault is a three phase mode in which one side is attacking, one is defending, similar to how Walker Assault functioned. However, the objective will differ from map to map, and the attacking side as well, meaning, Clone troopers on Geonosis, droids on Theed, Imperials on Hoth, Resistance on Starkiller Base, etc
  • We have no details on Starfighter assault, but to sum up anything, Criterion, developer behind games such as NFS and Burnout, are working on vehicles in this game, and are reported to have done a wonderful job. We are expected to hear more about this mode at Gamescom, which is scheduled for August 22nd

Multiplayer Classes:

  • There are four classes present in Battlefront 2. Each class have two class-specific slots for their cards or/and abilities, and a third slot for cards shared between classes, as well as traits unique to the class. The classes and their abilities are as follows:
    • Assault: Has 150 health, and carries an assault rifle. His first card is thermal detonator. His second card/ability, Vanguard Replenish, marks enemies to make it easier to target and hunt down. This ability allows him to pull out a close quarter weapon that has no heat buildup and replenishes its active time with each kill.
    • Heavy: Has 200 health, and carries an assault rifle.  His first card is a combat shield, that can be taken down, either via the user or once it takes enough damage. His unique second ability, Sentry, allows the heavy to enter a powerful medium range mode, using a heavy repeating blaster (mini-gun) to deal massive damage, at the cost of limited movement.
    • Specialist: Has 100 health, and carries a sniper rifle. His first card is a laser trip mine. His second ability, Infiltration Replenish, which revels all enemies on your scanner. It also scrambles enemy scanners near you and allows you to draw out a medium-range weapon with no heat buildup
    • Officer: Has 150 health, and carries a pistol. His first card is a blaster turret, similar to the infantry turret from Battlefront. His second unique ability, Battle Command Fortitude, issues a battle command that inspires friendlies around you, making them withstand more damage. You get the same effect, but only if there is a friendly nearby
  • Players can also purchase reinforcements with points they earn in game. These reinforcements are a little bit better and more unique in their abilities. The reinforcements seen and shown at EA Play were:
    • Jump-trooper (Republic)
    • Super Battle Droid (CIS)
    • Death Trooper (Empire)
    • Wookie Warrior (Republic)
  • Player can also purchase vehicles and star fighters with the same points. They differ from planet to planet, but here are all the confirmed ones so far:
    • AT-RT
    • N-1 Starfighter
    • V-Wing
    • ARC-170
    • Jedi Starfighter
    • MTT (Mult-Troop Transport)
    • AAT (Armored Assault Tank)
    • Vulture Droid
    • Tie Fighters (Empire and First Order)
    • AT-AT
    • AT-ST
    • X-Wing (Rebellion and Resistance)
    • A-Wing
    • Landspeeder
    • Jango Fett Slave 1
    • Millennium Falcon

Resource System:

  • This is the replacement for the pickup system from the first Battlefront, which was not popular with players
  • The concept behind the Resource system is simple, during your course of play, you earn points towards your overall bank, and once you die, depending on the amount you racked, you can purchase reinforcements, from B2 battle droids to heroes. Once you die with those reinforcements, you will need the same amount of points again to buy them
  • Points earned while using reinforcements count towards your overall, meaning you can purchase an AAT, and still earn points
  • Points earned while playing as heroes do not count towards your overall, for very obvious reasons.
  • Points reset after every match, meaning nothing carries from match to match, and every player starts from 0 in every match

Multiplayer Heroes:

  • According to developers, DICE will be going for a healthy and somewhat equal balance between all three trilogies. This will reflect in everything, from maps to heroes
  • So far, here are the confirmed heroes:
    • Republic Heroes: Yoda
    • CIS Heroes: Darth Maul
    • Imperial Heroes: Boba Fett, Darth Vader
    • Rebellion Heroes: Luke Skywalker, Han Solo
    • Resistance Heroes: Rey, Finn (To be introduced in Season 1 DLC)
    • First Order Heroes: Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma (To be introduced in Season 1 DLC)
  • All heroes will have unique abilities and play differently than one another
  • Heroes will also have unlockables, meaning you can improve a hero’s abilities.
  • Currently, heroes are claimed to be cross play, meaning Rey on Theed, Darth Maul on Hoth, etc. This is NOT a confirmed feature, meaning it could change over the course of the alpha, beta and full launch. The developers are aware of any and all complaints and will try to adjust accordingly

Multiplayer Maps:

  • So far, this is a list of the confirmed maps coming to the game on launch:
    • Naboo
    • Kamino
    • Kashyyyk
    • Hoth
    • Yavin IV
    • Tatoonie
    • Starkiller Base
    • Takodana
    • Jakku
    • Crait (Season 1, December)

Weapons, Cards and Abilities:

  • Here are some of the weapons featured in gameplay:
    • Assault Weapons: DC-15A, E-5, CR-2
    • Heavy Weapons: DC-15, E-5C, FWMB-10K
    • Specialist Weapons: Valken, 38-x, E-5S, A280-CFE
    • Officer Weapons: DC-17, GR-4D, Blurrg-1120
  • Cards will have 4 sets of rarity, each improving the card in some form of way. There 4 rarity levels are:
    • Common (what you start with, denoted by white color)
    • Uncommon (Green color)
    • Rare (Blue color)
    • Epic (Pink color)
  • Shared abilities seen in the Pre-Alpha build:
    • Grenade launcher (Barrage)
    • Scout Pistol
  • You can find every card, ability, and trait in this picture, along with their cool downs and rarity upgrades. Cards

Multiplayer Mechanics:

  • Scoping, crouching and moving now affect your weapon accuracy. This is different to the first, in which 3rd person hip firing was simply the most dominant. Players playing in first person will rack in benefits, same with players shooting still, crouching and so forth.
  • Classes have different amount of health. Assault class has 150 health, Heavy has 200, Specialist has 100, officer has 150. Each also have their own regeneration rates.
  • Controls for Starfighters is improved, with additions such as manual aiming and rolling. Auto leveling has also been reduced
  • Weapon overheating has been reworked. You can now wait for your weapon to cool down by itself, which is the safest option, or manually cool it down, in which you can’t fire while it is so. There is also a third option, which is overheating and triggering a cool-down, with the user attempting a mini-game at it. You can see it properly in this video.
  • Partner system is gone. Players now spawn in squads, selecting a unit and being placed in a 10s queue. Other players are placed in the same queue and squad and spawned in together. You can learn more about it in this video
  • Friends will be able to play together, without varying squads

When do you get to play it?

  • The beta will be some time in fall, around late September, early October.
  • This is an open beta, meaning everyone will be able to join it and experience it.
  • Anyone who pre-orders the game gets early access to it, though unconfirmed by how much.
  • Reports are there that a closed alpha will start sometime this month, similar to what was done in the last years. Bear in mind that if you do receive an invite, please make sure to post feedback in the forums as instructed, and refrain from breaking NDA or posting about it outside the official alpha forums.

Release Versions:

  • Currently, there are two versions available for purchase:
    • Standard Edition ($60). This edition unlocks on November 17, with the pre-load available on November 10. Pre-ordering this edition also grants you access to TFA skins for Rey and Kylo Ren
    • Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition ($80). This edition unlocks on November 14, with the pre-load available on November 10. Pre-ordering this edition also grants you access to TFA skins, as well as upgrade packs for all 4 classes in game
  • Please note: While where you purchase your copy from is your choice, bear in mind some things to avoid complications:
    • Purchasing from any 3rd party vendor does not guarantee you the ability to pre-load, as they will deliver your keys on launch day
    • Some websites may be trying to scam you, or even worse, sell you illegal copies. Please make sure to check any website you buy from, to avoid losing money, and having your copy revoked
    • Best advice right now is to purchase it directly from Origin or an authorized 3rd party seller. You can also try out Origin Access, which gives you 10% discount on your purchases, and while you wait, try out all the awesome games they have in the vault

Some final notes:

  • “Wow, the trailers as super misleading”. The game will look and sound just like what you see, maybe even better come full launch. The Frostbite engine is one of the best on the market, if not the best in visual and sound fidelity, so expect nothing less than what you see currently in Battlefield 1 and Battlefront
  • “There is something wrong here, can't be true from EA”. With the DLC being free, and micro-transactions confirming it is not P2W, people are skeptical on what is hidden. While no one is demanding you pre-order, please refrain from spouting unconfirmed or even blatantly inaccurate information. This simply does not help anyone, and paints you as someone against it working
  • “It will be like the first, just disappointing”. That is impossible to tell, even at this point. Ironically, everything people hated about the first is getting fixed or re-worked in some way in this game. Bear in mind, people work with this game, and are excited to introduce it, so just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t mean others are the same. Respect that
  • “NAH Rey and Maul on same planet? Blasphemy!” At this point, nothing is set in stone as to how it will work in the game. This means that DICE is open to changing the way certain things work depending on feedback and suggestions from the player base during the Alpha and Beta.
  • "Micro-transactions?! In a $60 game?? What a rip off!" None of the MT will be P2W, neither will they be required. They mainly exist to provide a source of income for the developers to continue developing free content updates for the game throughout its life cycle. You are not required to buy them, nor are you entitled to.
  • "They better have all the content from previous BF2, or this planet or that hero" The developers stated that they will keep looking at the official forums and reddit, as a source of inspiration for their upcoming content. While season 1 is already set, they are open to changing anything after, and will be looking for feedback. With that said, keep your expectations checked and don't let them run wild, or you will end up disappointing yourself.

That is pretty much it folks! Cool

If you are yearning for some Battlefront 2, here is a playlist I complied from various content creators. Feel free to add more if you think you need to: Youtube Playlist

I hope to see many of you during the Beta, and even better, come full launch. I am sure many people are excited for this game, and are looking forward to it Big Smile

Alas:

  • The game will feature micro transactions which will include unlocks and cosmetics.

Bingo, there we have it. I'm fine with cosmetics, but if you can unlock weapon enhancing modifications like scopes or handguards or something like that with real money, that's just boring and on the border of being pay to win. OK, you can grind your way through that, but you can also spend 100 bucks to have the best scope and type of rifle before your first game. I hope there is a limit to that.

I also do not like the way weapons are handled in general. In the Battlefield titles, you can select a range of equipment that fits your playstyle and you have a limited amount of ammo for them, but they are all ready to use.

In Battlefront 2, your equipment is behind a cooldown timer,. The specialist submachine gun, and the pistol are both locked behind a cooldown once used.

That is a horrible mechanic and dramtically limits my ability to react to certain situations.

What I do like is the ressource system for heroes or vehicles. The pickups in BF1 were stupid.

Another major flaw of BF2 is the random spawn mechanic. I want to spawn with my squad, like I can in all the Battlefield titles. In BF2, you are placed into a random group of 4 people waiting to respawn and you then get points for sticking to these random people.

To end on a positive note: Sound design and graphics are blowing me away. There is room for improvement in map design on Theed and like I said Gameplay-wise, but boy do they nail how the game looks and sounds everytime.

In conclusion I don't understand why Dice is trying to reinvent the wheel here. The mechanics have proven themselves over a decade in the Battlefield titles, why do they change that?

The game just feels super arcadey and it seems like they want to enable even non FPS-players a quick dive into the game, but by doing that they are taking away the tactical feeling that Battlefield always had.

The micro-transactions will be mainly cosmetic and the unlock ones will be similar to what the current battlefront and battlefield had for quite a while. Just because they can be bought, doesn't mean they can be used effectively. There is also a big chance they will have level requirements as well, preventing anyone spending money to get them instantly from the start. And even then, they aren't that much of game-changers. As for pay-2-win, that is applied when what you buy is better than what you get, which is never the case here and won't be. Everyone will earn these weapons/cards, and they will have a normal progress curve. Nothing similar to actual P2W games. EA and DICE need an income source in order to keep working on the game and keep making content for it. If such micro-transactions are not good, we could always go back to the season pass. Wink

That's to prevent certain abuses of mechanics and also to balance stuff around. Having a heavy blaster minigun all the time would make it impossible to balance, even if you add to it heavy spread and low damage. The equipment, as in any other game, is supposed to enhance and support your soldier, not make them. As for timers, they differ from card to another, and are usually tweaked according to the card.

Thats how it was in the build at EA Play, but for multiple reasons. Come full game, you will be able to do similar actions, we just don't know how it will be exactly, or what will limit it. There is more info to come on this soon according to DICE. You will also not be partnered with random people when you are in a party, as some people are claiming.

Iqfish:
In conclusion I don't understand why Dice is trying to reinvent the wheel here. The mechanics have proven themselves over a decade in the Battlefield titles, why do they change that?

Because this is not a Battlefield game, nor should it act like one. While the original 2 had similarities, the developers (Pandemic) never intended to have them be like Battlefield, and DICE does not wish to do that here as well. They could simply do that, and be lazy about it, but that will just prompt people to yell "Reskin" without any consideration or thought. Battlefront is meant to be a different experience than Battlefield, not the same.

Iqfish:
The game just feels super arcadey and it seems like they want to enable even non FPS-players a quick dive into the game, but by doing that they are taking away the tactical feeling that Battlefield always had.

Again, this is not battlefield, and not "arcadey". I don't know what footage or content creator implied/said this to make you say so, but the game, according to many who played it and tested it, felt better and more demanding than the previous one. This is reinforced by the class system and several other factors, such as accuracy changes and stuff. It is no Counter Strike, but definitely not "arcadey" as the first.

Great post Alas! Very Informative for people that have not been keeping up with the news and game play videos.

Personally, most of the things I had issues with in the first game are being fixed in this one.
