I am playing the alpha and have ordered the standard addition but I'm struggling with the stash size. Is it worth upgrading to get the bigger stash and gamma crate?

I can tell you from experience that even with the EOD stash, space becomes an issue real fast. You will eventually be able to upgrade your stash to the size of an EOD through ingame mechanics, but i don't know when that will be added.
The question is, do you think spending the money right now for an upgrade, when you will be able to get it for free later, is worth it?
Like i said, stash size will always be an issue, even with the biggest stash. The tendency is to keep storing stuff so you will always hit a limit eventually.

Yep cost/can get later on choice.
This is a bit late but a handy trick, while in your storage, open a backpack and move everything in there. Once the bag is full, put that into a same size or larger back. This will help clear up room, but may make it harder/confusing to get a specific item when you want it later down the line
You also get life time DLC's, something to consider.
