With the Battlefield reveal that happened on May 23rd, We were not only officially introduced to the setting Battlefield V is going to be in, but also given a whole load of information on how Battlefield V will change the way we play Battlefield, and what can we expect going forward.

I looked around at various videos and content from Game Changers, and took the liberty of compiling it all in a nice fashion, for your reading pleasure. While all the information is official, bear in mind, things can and will change from now till release. With that said, sit back, and read how Battlefield V aims to change the formula.

Battlefield V

Battlefield V will be set during World War 2, with DICE taking a new approach on the era we all know and read about. BFV will not be your typical WW2 shooter, and will feature changes to core mechanics and gameplay elements that you would expect from a Battlefield game. That is not to say it is no longer battlefield, but rather, it took what made it so, and improved upon it.

The game is said to span the entire war, so expect weapons, vehicles, maps and more from every year.

Battlefield V is set to release on October 19th, with the Deluxe Edition releasing on October 16th. Membership in EA/Origin Access will allow players to play a limited part of the game on October 11th. Below you can find the links for both game editions, as well as their prices (North America)

Standard Edition ($60)

Deluxe Edition ($80)

What you shall receive in each edition

An important note: Access to the beta is NOT LIMITED to Pre-orders. Beta in August will be open to all. Pre-ordering only nets you early access to it.

General Information

  • Premium pass will no longer exist in its current format
  • BFV will NOT be “Pay-2-Win”. You cannot buy progression, in any way and form, and the main focus is to “play-to-progress
  • There are micro-transactions, in the form of visual customization for players, weapons and vehicles
  • There are NO loot-boxes. You will get what you pay for.
  • This is a WW2, inspired by the era and setting, but not aiming to depict it or deliver a realistic experience.  DICE is aiming to be authentic to a certain degree
  • Gameplay is going to be more vertical than previous battlefield, with bridges, buildings, and more
  • 4 Player classes: Assault, Medic, Scout and Support
  • Factions will have their own specific vehicles. So German forces will have a Tiger, Allies a Sherman, and so forth. Balance will be implemented in such way that heavy vehicles can be outmaneuvered by lighter vehicles, and so forth. Basically, asymmetrically gameplay
  • Elite Classes and Behemoths are no longer in game in their current state
  • Dynamic Weather is back from BF1. Rain, sandstorms, fog, and more can be expected in every match
  • Reviving is now a full animation, not just a poke of a syringe. Anyone can revive, but medics do it faster
  • You cannot shoot downed players (Refer to Spawning Mechanics)
  • Players can lay prone on their back or stomach, similar to Rainbow Six Siege
  • Sprinting while crouched available. Slower than regular sprinting, but allows you to run behind low cover, and also maintaining a low profile.
  • DICE is moving to server side updates. Bugs, as well as unintended features, can be changed or tweaked without requiring a client side patch.
  • DICE also promises to continue the communication from BF1 and even improve on it more.
  • Tides of War is a new feature, and will include new progression archetypes and content drops in terms of daily, weekly and monthly challenges, allowing players to complete challenges, quests and limited time events to earn rewards and cosmetics.

Single Player

  • War stories are back from BF1
  • Will feature different settings and times during the war
  • The 1st "Chapter" we get to experience at launch will be called "Fall of Europe"
  • Locations such as Norway, France and North Africa will be featured.

Game-Modes

  • Conquest
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Domination
  • Conquest Assault
  • Frontlines
  • Combined Arms
    • Co-op makes a return in BFV. Players can play with up to 3 of their friends against enemy AI, all while progressing their character and player profile. Nothing but fun and destruction in here.
  • Grand Operations
    • This is operations from Battlefield 1 on juice. Players will experience all-out war, spanning over 4 in-game days. Each day will feature a different game-mode, map and rules, making it harder or easier. You will reach the final day in every operation you play.
      • Day 1 - Airborne: Jump out of the craft and right into the action
      • Day 2 - Breakthrough: Capture necessary points 1 by 1, all while trying to stay alive in brutal and chaotic combat
      • Day 3 - Conquest Assault: Name says it all. DICE emphasizes that this is part of the extensive live service coming with Battlefield V, and it can be modifed to feature new twists, and offer new rewards for players.
      • Day 4 - Final Stand: If you draw or achieve a close score in Day 3, you arrive here. 1 life, 1 chance, almost no resources, and the weather sure can be better. Fight to survive, to win, and to be the last man standing to achieve victory to your team.

Game Mechanics

Ahhh, the most important part. Here you will find a list of changes that are coming with Battlefield V in regards to gun-play, player movement, how the player interacts with the world, as well as squad changes.

  • Gunplay
    • Visual Recoil (RBD) is completely gone.
    • This will give guns unique patterns to their recoil, allowing players to learn them to better use them, and become proficient with them.
    • Bipods are even easier to deploy now.
    • Bullets can actually penetrate surfaces such as thing wood, metal sheets, and certain walls. Larger caliber weapons will penetrate thicker materials. Tank shells will simply implode sections.
    • Grenades can now be thrown back and even shot to make them explode. Their timer is also longer than their counterparts in BF1
    • Sniper Rifle "Sweet Spot" are gone. Introduced in BF1, this mechanic allowed sniper rifles to kill with one shot, as long as the target was in the "sweet spot" range.
    • Bayonet charging is still in game, however, equipping a bayonet will take a gadget slot.
  • Player Movement
    • Player movement has greatly improved since BF1. The player's character will react accordingly with it's surrounding, such as walls, doors and windows, with weight behind every push, collision, etc. The environment may also cause the player to stumble, stagger, etc.
    • You can jump out of windows now instantly. No need to break them, you can just jump through and commando roll as you hit the ground, in order to keep your momentum.
    • Player character will move to adapt depending on the environment you are in, whether its mud, grass, water or slopes.
    • "Dolphin Diving" is in game, and you can dive in every direction, while shooting in the air as well. Bear in mind, there is an accuracy penalty and cool-down on the dive, to prevent it's abuse.
  • Game World
    • Destruction system is nothing like previous Battlefield games. Debris from structures will fall depending on several factors, such as weight, density, etc.
    • Explosions now take in how they occur and their effect on the surroundings. If something explodes inside a building, the blast will be outwards, pushing everything through openings. If it was outside, blast will be inwards the house
    • Roadkills are still possible with various vehicles, including planes
    • 3D spotting is a thing of the past. Players have to depend more on their senses, rather than mashing a button. You need to listen to gunshots, footsteps, general movement to spot effectively
    • Vehicles can tow stationary weapons such as AA guns, field guns, and even resupply stations to the battlefield
    • Capture flags/areas have designated points to refill on ammo/health
  • Spawning
    • After getting shot and downed, you can go one of three ways:
      • Into a revive animation, where you can look around and call out for help from your team. There is a timer however, hence..
      • Failing to get a revive will send you to a screen POV of your squad mate, giving you over the shoulder look/view. You can spawn in on them then, unless the timer runs out
      • If it does, and you don’t spawn within the time, or all your squad is dead, you go to your typical view of the map, selecting to spawn on points or such
  • Player Interaction with World
    • Player interaction is vital in BFV. No more walking by ammo crate or health crate to regain ammo/health. You need to interact with the world, picking up ammo, med kits, healing yourself. All will require a press of button, and takes time depending on the task
    • Speaking of healing, You will no longer regen health up to 100. You will only regen up to a a certain stage, requiring you to seek a medic or health point in order to fully regen.
    • Melee animations still in game, now more unique thanks to different weapon choices
    • Ragdoll animations are all server side now. When you explode and your limp body goes flying around doing weird things, everyone will see the same thing and laugh
    • Dying players (Downed) can be grabbed and dragged by other teammates to safety, where they can be revived
    • Non-lethal explosions or large explosions can knock a player character away
    • Players can loot dead enemies for ammo/health
    • Player driven vehicles (Tanks) can drive through any part of building, knocking it down. Building walls falls or crack slowly, not instantly
  • Squad Mechanics
    • 4 Man squads are back
    • Squad can do various tasks to accumulate points, to allow the squad leader to call in various types of combat support. Only the squad leader has a radio to call in and mark areas on the map to have stuff dropped. Among these call ins are:
      • V1 Rocket or JB2 Rocket (To Destroy Fortifications with it)
      • Resupply Crates
      • Smoke Barrage
      • Hero Vehicles, vehicles that are 4 man operated only by your squad, and offer unique abilities. Such vehicles include the Sturmtiger and Churchill Crocodile
    • Squads can build their “meter” by doing various things in a match
      • Capping points
      • Giving out ammo/health
      • Killing enemies
      • Building fortifications
    • Fortifications can be built by anyone in the squad, though the support is able to do it faster
      • Toolbox given to support, as a gadget
      • Can only be built in pre-determined areas
      • Examples of fortifications include
        • Walls
        • Sandbags
        • Foxholes
        • Barbed Wire
        • Trenches
        • Tank Traps
        • Destroyed buildings can be somewhat rebuilt to defend
    • Buddy System
      • Anyone in squad or team can revive you, it takes longer however than being revived by a medic
      • A buddy revive will not net you full health

Customization and Progression

Battlefield V will focus a plethora of customization for the player to choose from, whether its their soldier’s gender, or their tanks, or even class specialty. All is customizable.  The more you play, the more you are able to do. Plain and simple

  •  Archetypes
    • Archetypes are class specific sets that you can unlock and equip to further customize your class, giving you more freedom on your play style. Such include the Recon Paratrooper, who is equipped suppressed SMGs, silent gadgets, allowing him to take down enemies quietly. You can also customize your assault class character to be for instance a more anti-tank class, or more anti-air, or both. It is up to you how you do it
    • Classes will feature their own archetypes and weapons. You unlock more by playing more and leveling up your class rank, much like in BF1. You start with one Archetype, and unlock more as you progress
  • Weapon Customization
    • Different customization will be available on guns, including but not limited to:
      • Suppressors
      • Bipods
      • Fore-grips
      • Muzzles
      • Sight/Scopes
      • Stocks
  • Player Progression
    • Playing more will allow you to unlock more content. This is all part of the live service, where you will receive new assignments, orders and special assignments on daily basis
    • The more you play, the more you rank up your skill tree, unlock new gun attachments, as well as vehicle and player customization
  • Cosmetic Customization (Player)
    • Player have the ability to change any of the following character and company:
      • Gender
      • Facial Structure
      • Prosthetics
      • Custom Cloths and accessories
      • Tattoos
      • Facial Accessories (Glasses, Paint, etc.)
  • Cosmetic Customization (Weapons & Vehicles)
    • Players can equip camouflage or custom skins on their weapons and vehicles. Skins are unlocked by playing more
    • Almost 7 parts of guns can be customized
    • Vehicles can be renamed (Fury Tank Incoming!)

F.A.Q.

  • What in the world is DICE making?
    • Battlefield V is set during WW2 and is inspired by many of the battles and stories in it. It will not be a 1:1 replica of it, nor will it aim for realism. DICE have stated they will try to be authentic to a certain degree.
  • Is it V or 5?
    • Its V.
  • So...Do I need to pre-order to access the Open Beta?
    • Nope. Everyone will be able to play the Open Beta later this summer. You will simply need an Origin Account
  • Can I pre-order from 3rd party websites?
    • Yes, but on your own risk. While many are respectable and legitimate, others are not. Be aware of that as you buy for any game for that matter. Also, bear in mind, pre-ordering from a 3rd party may not enable you to pre-load or get your key in time.
  • What can we expect at EA Play?
    • Game-play, as well as a plethora of more information. Be sure to tune in our Teamspeak on day of the stream, as well as here on the TAW forums for a similar info post.
  • Micro-transactions? AGAIN?
    • Yes, DICE is finally ditching the current version of Premium, in order to provide maps and weapons to all players for free. With that, a different source of revenue is required to sustain development costs. Bear in mind, all MTX are cosmetic, and will not feature loot-boxes. You will purchase cosmetics either via in-game credits or real world money.
  • Why in the world does that guy have blue paint on his face? This ain't WW2!
    • Everything you saw in the trailer was in fact used/applied/seen in World War 2. Nothing is fictional, nor created from imagination. The place of usage is the only difference.
  • It's not giving me a WW2 vibe, I don't really like it
    • That is completely fine. DICE is aiming to take a different preservative on WW2, while trying to remain loyal to it.
  • Nobody should pre-order, it's EA!
    • What people do with their hard earned cash is their problem, not yours. The point behind posts like these is to try to inform people as much as possible of what is in the game, how they can play it and try it, and where can they buy it. The decision then comes to them whether they want to buy it or not. Opinions will never be presented by me, only facts.

That is all for now! I will update this list as we get closer to EA Play (June 9th). After which, I will post a new thread, detailing everything from the event. We will be hosting a view party in TS, so we can hang out, and just talk all things Battlefield and Battlefront, as well as many others!

Considering there's no more premium to pay for any more, it's now half the price lol. I am curious to see how the server side hit detection affects the net code. I'm reserving judgement for the beta, but I've owned every Battlefield game since BF: Vietnam, so it's hard to let go. Hope it's good.

Although BF1 got a lot of hate, I still play it but only the smaller game modes (i.e Frontlines). It's just a matter of opinion on what FPS game suits you the most lol.

Front lines never worked in Australia, never enough people. Looked like a great idea though

I was sold at "Battlefield V".

No but seriously, Grand Operations and lifetime support for the game got me really hyped; Operations is hands down the best gamemode in BF1 in my opinion - it's like a better version of 'Rush' - and no Premium Pass means no split in the playerbase!

My opinion whether or not to buy the game: there is an open beta in the summer, wait for that, then if you really must you can pre-order!

Why is the announcements so disliked? In the reveal trailer we saw exhaustive customization, female characters and prosthesis (?); twitch chat went bonkers at the time. Aside from whether you can distinguish and enemy from a friendly, customization is completely OPTIONAL. Will it ruin your immersion; depends on you. Is the game less fun because of it; hell no. Look at BF1, it uses tons of experimental weapons and machinery that haven't ever see the light of day. Is that historically accurate; no, but it is hella fun.

Now remember: NO pre-orders untill the open beta!
