I have already submitted an interest form to Vanguard, with this post I hope to raise awareness and possible interest among TAW to bring this to Vanguard! :)

About the game

Spellbreak is an epic fantasy action-spellcasting game officially released last week,  where players fight to become an all-powerful battlemage. Weave spectacular spell combinations, craft strategic builds, and master your environment as you dominate the Hollow Lands solo or with friends in a non-stop quest for survival.

Choose your element

As a radical “Battlemage” wizard, you have no need for mortal firearms. Instead of guns, your weapons are different elemental gauntlets. You pick one of these gauntlets before starting a match to shape your general playstyle as you’ll have their distinct abilities for the entire round.

You also find more gauntlets on the battlefield to equip on your other hand, giving you access to two elements at once.

Fight or flee

The big magic spells make teamfights a spectacular battle, which is more frantic and exciting than hiding in a bush with a shotgun. Instead of having 100 players, the maximum is 42, which make matches breeze by wether you play solo, dual (coming out on 14.09) or with your friends in a 3-person squad.

Large projectiles combined with generous health and shields make combat feel more approachable for casual players.

The eyecandy

The game itself is very pleasing on graphics side. It is like Fortnite, but with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild artstyle. Oh, and without the hideous building system. Yes it's a Battle Royale, but the team behind Spellbreak have managed to find a new perspective in the vast field of BR games, thanks to the magic use.

Check this game out, here's their webiste: https://playspellbreak.com/en

If this game sparked your interest, please fill out the interest form so we could bring this to TAW :)

PS: there's also a poll to see how many people would be in for some battlemage action!

Would you be interested in Spellbreak?

  • Yes (80%)
  • No (20%)
  • Not quite feeling it yet (0%)
  • Total Votes: 10

I've been playing a few matches of this game recently. I've been waiting patiently for it to come out of closed beta to try it out, but it's not as cool as I hoped.

The use of magic and the ways you cast and combine elements is cool, but the whole game boggles down to a mindless Fortnite reminiscent style of battle royale. You drop (with a clunky system), loot to get items of better rarities that directly boost your damage, health and "special ability" cooldown, and the TTK is insanely long.

In the end, you walk for minutes without finding anyone, and spam abilities nonstop for a few minutes until one of the two is out of health. The one with better rarity of gear is in a big advantage, rewarding luck over skill.

The team mode is absolutely enraging. No way to properly do teamwork. It's easy to lose sight of your teammates, they can drop anywhere, even on the opposite side of the map, you can't ping a drop location or anything like that, there's no chat or voice commands, and the only teamwork related mechanic is casting back a killed friend back to life.

I'd suggest trying it out for the novely of the elemental mage system, but it's a long way from becoming an even remotely good game.

I just hope it will be properly worked and improved upon in all departments, and not just given a basic attempt and see it die in 1 or 2 years like Darwin Project (which was mostly abandoned, then drastically changed from the cool prison Hunger Games style into a neon & spandex class shooter battle royale, and then closed down due to lack of players).

Okay I'd like to talk about some points you brought out :P

How is loot dropping clunky? You open a chest with a single click, then press the same keyboard key to pick an item up and bam you have it. For faster looting you just spam the same key and you'll be equipped with better equipment in a blink of an eye. I don't really see the clunkiness of this system, but fair enough, personal preferences I guess.

It kinda is the theme of Battle Royale games that you don't get stuck in a small arena with 40 other players, so walking (or flying, as it is one of the most common rune to be picked) for a few minutes to get into contact is part of the BR experience.

It goes without saying, that having better gear gives you an advantage, it would be weird to not have such a system. What would be the point to even have items if that were not the case?

This game is pretty much skill based, yes you might hit some lucky shots from time to time, but it all culminates into good aim. You have to land your shots to get kills. Spamming mindlessly brings you nowhere.

Easy to lose sight of your teammates? You can see their nameplate, which is written in bold. It is hard to lose your team, since you also have a map.

Picking a drop point is part of teamwork, you need to mutually agree where to land etc.. and to do that you use pinging. Yes, the very thing, that you claimed was not in the game. If you have default settings, you can ping with mouse 3 (the wheel). You can also remove pings with the very same button.

It is also quite common that hen dropping, people can separate if they want to. This should be a feature you know very well, since you play Apex legends yourself. In Spellbreak that was just expanded into map-wide drop for anyone. Keep in mind that it is purely optional, not a forced feature!

You can use your microphone for communication, not having voice commands or chatbox is the best option, because that eliminates the megatrolls who keep spamming crap in chat. Then again, this is a personal preference, so let's just agree to disagree on that matter.

The main complaints feel more like not doing well in a game or getting random people who refuse to do teamwork. The very reason why I would like to get this game to TAW is to make sure you play in a team that communicates with each other and try to achieve mutual agreement on anything necessary (where to drop, who gets what loot, where should we go next).

As it is with many games, some genres are just not for everyone.

I hope to not offend you in any way, I just saw some points that needed some correcting and had to have m say in it.

i disagree with this 100%. once you get some wins under your belts and stop facing bots the action picks up tremendously. TTK once you learn how to use all abilities together goes down quite alot as well.

Cultofdarkness,

The drop from the portal, gliding to the ground, is super clunky. You can't even go straight down, and the character often takes an upside-down position even if they're gliding quite horizontally.
The loot system, instead, is dumb.
In many games of the battle royale market nowadays, you loot guns with different properties usually balanced with each other. Loot like gun attachments may help by reducing the screen shake and allow to use better-looking sights, but overall the impact is minor.
Said design makes the game less centered on luck and more about competitiveness and individual player skill.
Spellbreak instead uses a bunch of rarities for their gauntlets and high TTK, which means a player with an epic gauntlet will be in a significant advantage over an opponent with a common one due to the bold damage output difference over time.
The grind to unlock new passive abilities, some of which are ridiculous and almost mandatory like self-revive on death, also strays away from a fair and competitive battle royale.
It is not the theme of a battle royale to be a walking simulator for minutes. This is inexcusable; I don't understand why you're even attempting to.
If the engagement rate is almost zero for 85% of the match, the map is too big and not designed for just 40 players.
Nameplates are not always visible. So far I've only experienced in squad mode that the other players would ignore any group intent in landing together, wander around solo and only sometimes regroup "accidentally" because of loot interest, not to stay together as a team.
Since I play games like Apex Legends as you said, I probably know much better than you about this stuff then. And I suggest you play it a bit more before making such an inexistent comparison. In Apex, splitting is optional for the sake of covering more area. There is 1 jumpmaster that guides the entire team to the landing spot, and you can use a well made and noticeable ping system to convey information about placement, intention, and warnings. It has 60 players but the map is significantly smaller, with each area having a purpose, instead of being a huge land of nothingness with some copypasted buildings and hills from time to time. Downtime is rare and usually prominent only in the higher levels of competitive play, due to players playing defensively and staying alert, rather than using auto-walk for 5 minutes.
Saying you can use voice chat while also saying that not having a chat is better to eliminate spam trolls, with a straight face, is weirdly hilarious. You're missing the elephant in the room: people spam a lot more and a lot more annoyingly in their microphones if they want to grief. They scream, "eat" the mic, use soundboards with deep-fried music, play screeching, use open mics with a lot of background noise... Chat spam is first of all usually curbed by limiting the send rate of subsequent messages. Then there's the fact that it's a small chat window anyway. Also, you're ignoring how many people don't feel comfortable talking or have no microphone, making chat widely more used in battle royale games with strangers.
Then again, you wanted to underline I'm from the Apex Legends unit, maybe I'm just too used to much higher standards than this silly game provides.

Fair enough, it is up to everyone's personal opinions after all :P I hope you will keep enjoying Apex Legends in the future as well then :)

If we do get Spellbreak into TAW, you're always welcome to come and try it again!
