There are a multitude of things that could be going wrong with your inability to ensure elims. These include things as small as simple mechanics to things more complex like positioning and ultimate economy. However, a lot of the time, it comes down to your DPS synergy.
It is commonly accepted that anything more than two DPS heroes is no good, but people do not seem to understand the simple anti-synergies between DPS heroes. For example, it would not be wise to have a Mei and a Junkrat as your two DPS. Mei is a CC (Crowd Control) hero, and Junkrat provides area denial. Without proper follow-up, both of those heroes are ineffective, especially together. What should one do to make sure the team has a good combination of DPS?
People often wonder and complain about the abundance of DPS heroes in comparison to the lack of tanks and supports. Well, there is a proper reason for this. There are so many different ways a team can counter enemies using damage, but only a few ways healing and tanking can counter enemies. Take a look at the support ultimates. Typically, they are either preemptive or reactive. Lucio's sound barrier is usually used for a preemptive attack or defense while Zen and Mercy would use their ults in reaction to a certain scenario. With DPS, there always needs to be a consistent flow of damage. Determining which way is best will lead to success.
In Overwatch, burst hitscan is the best bet. This is one of the reasons McCree is played highly. Along with that, you can have a projectile hero. This is where characters such as Hanzo, Junkrat, Mei and low damage flankers can be played (Mei can also be played as an off-tank, but that is off-topic). Their damage will be complimented by follow-up damage.
To put it simply, know how to balance consistent and inconsistent damage. If you see genji instalocked, and you want to play DPS, you might want to take something more consistent. Reaper, McCree, or even Soldier 76 would be better than a Tracer or Hanzo. Also, always remember that even if your composition is perfect, there are a variety of different causes for a certain failure. Be sure to remain positive and use your intelligence to determine who to play.
