Military Medic Advice Needed

Hello, I shoot guns a lot (hunting, range day, competition) and I want to put together an IFAK or a similar medical pack that I can use to treat gun shot wounds in arms, chest and so on, in case the worst happens.

I got the basics figured out like tourniquet, combat gauze, scissors, decompression needle, ace wrap, nasopharyngeal airway, chest seals.

I am not a medic and not sure what else I need or where I can get training on using these. So if there is someone who could give me some advice on either the usage of said items or recommend something that is missing I would greatly appreciate it !!!

Hey man

I think that a really good bet is to take a look at existing military IFAK's as they of course are battle proven.

A quick Google search threw this at me and it looks to have some pretty good detail on what they contain and even on how to use some of the gear.

Edit: Just to clarify since you where specifically asking for that, i was a Squad Leader when i was in the army, not a medic. So if anyone here was a dedicated medic then they can probably provide better advice than me. Big Smile

Being a former medic i would advice to take a course that teaches you to use those things. The reason behind it is when for example put the decompression needle on the wrong spot/ side the person will die.

so for more info search me on TS

In modern day Needle Chest Decompressions are not normally needed. The only time I had to perform one was when the pneumothorax occurred over hours. If you are planning to be without advanced care for more then two hours get the training on how to use one. Otherwise, train on how to apply tourniquets, dressings, and just general how to stop the bleeding. If you get hit in the chest and need a NCD you will have a chest tube placed in the Emergency room.

On the more personal note I was a Combat Medic with the U.S. Army! I served with the  25th Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade (light infantry).
