Battlefield 1 Performance Tips

So you finally decided to pick up Battlefield 1 and join the ranks of the elite. Congratulations, you are about to enter the dawn of all-out war, and we are here to help you get the most out of your system to fully immerse yourself in this visually stunning game. With the release of Battlefield 1 being much more stable than of it's predecessor, Battlefield 4, the game is still giving certain users issues, whether it be issues in maintaining or achieving stable frame-rates, or crashing due to multiple errors. Due to that, the Staff here at the Battlefield Division has complied this list of fixes that were tried personally by members or advised by people from all over the glorious inter-webs. We have taken the liberty of arranging these in tiers, with 1 being fixes you can do on the fly and doesn't include anything drastic, and 3 being time consuming and so forth. 

Tier 1

ShadowPlay

Shadowplay, since launch, seems to be having issues with Battlefield 1. Disabling the feature allowed members to gain a big FPS boost, so it's worth a try to do so. If you are unclear on how to turn it off, you can check out this video

Origin in Game

Origin in game is the overlay Origin uses. Disabling this seemed to improve FPS to certain individuals. However, keep in mind that running the game in windowed or border-less mode hinders the overlay inactive by default. You can see how to disable it in this video

DX12 or DX11

Many members have reported that switching from DX11 to DX12 in the options menu in game have improved FPS for them. On the other hand, many reported that DX12 reduced performance. Try disabling or enabling it, you might see gains or loss depending on your hardware and drivers. (Bear in mind, unless you are running Windows 10, DX12 is not viable) 

Unplug or disable secondary monitors

Simply unplug your 2^nd or/and 3^rd monitors. Members reported gains in FPS doing do. You can either unplug the monitors from you graphics card, or use WinKey + P to disable or activate your monitors. 

Windows 10 Game DVR

Make sure that the Xbox GameDVR is turned off if you are running Windows 10. You can see how to turn it off here

Limiting your Framerate

Make sure you limit your framerate to that of your monitor. You should find the option to do so in the game option menu. Bear in mind, anything lower than 60 would cause your game client to run slower than the server, which is not good in terms of gameplay. Avoid making the limit above 60 if your hardware is unable to maintain the framerate comfortably. 

Disabling Memory Limits

Make sure to disable the memory restrictions option in the game. Members reported gaining FPS due to disabling this option, especially when running older cards.

Run the game in Windowed or Borderless Mode

Repair your game

Sometimes, the simplest solution is the answer. Right click on your game in Origin and repair it. Bear in mind, this process might take a while depending on your installation setup.

Tier 2

Display Drivers

Re-install your Drivers using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). Download the program from this LINK. Run it, and reboot your PC into safe mode, removing any of the old drivers, then re-download the latest from AMD or NVIDIA. You can follow this guide here if you are unsure on how to use it: Guide

Unpark your CPU cores.

Unparking your CPU cores could help boost FPS for you, especially if you are running Windows 7 or 8.  Install ParkControl and make sure Parking is disabled. You might want to also disable frequency scaling, so that’s it’s always 100%.

For i7 processors

If you own an i7 processor, making sure Hyperthreading is enabled could boost your FPS. Consult your motherboard manual to see how to do so in BIOS. 

Tier 3

RAM

If you are running your ram off of one stick, aka single channel, consider purchasing an additional stick of ram to allow it to run in Dual Channel. Members reported a huge FPS gain as well as stability due to this. Size seems unimportant at the moment, but having anything more than 8 seems to do the trick.  *This is off experience of individuals, including myself. This may or may not improve your game performance*

Upgrading your PC

Well, if you are still running an old 480 or a 580, maybe its time to lay the old guard to rest , as upgrading is possibly your only solution. Please refer to this video for illustration on the benefits.
