Oath to I.T.: New DDR4 SOON!

At the end of 2012 JEDEC showed the specifications to the new DDR4 and now the job is going on fully to make it the new standard in real applications. Samsung claim on august 30th that they have started to mass produce, what they call, the most advanced DDR4-memory in the world.

The new memories from Samsung will come in the capacity of 16 and 32 GB per module and be based on the chipset with 20 nanometric-tech . The new memories are meant for servers and got a speed of 2667 MHz, which is 25% faster than previous memories based on DDR3 (max 2133 MHz). Apart from higher speed they will also have a 30% lower energy consumption.

DDR4 will also have several differences from DDR3 apart from speed. Amongst other things the DDR4 will have a couple of optimizations to be able to minimize the latency times with the higher frequency and to stop with one memory channel per module. There is also support for stapling the circuits, which will give more memory density.

Even though Samsung is ready with the DDR4-Memories it will take a while before they will be used in large scale. Intel is expected to be one of the first retailers to support the DDR4 standard in their server- and antusiastorientated CPU Haswell-E. that is supposed to hit the market sometimes Q3-Q4 2014.
